Lethargy

Tell me something about you. When did it all began and how does it started with Lethargy?

Mayte: The people that form lethargy are Mayte Cruz // vocals, synthesizers, & programming Julio Tome // programming, production & synthesizers Before we met in a club , we have been working one by one with different projects. Both of us used to have synthesizers, sequencers … When we create lethargy in 1998 we started joining our energy, ideas, knowledge with a very big understanding from the beginning.

Why did you choose Lethargy as a bandname?

Mayte: There is not a special reason for that. We like the sound and the meaning of the word. Maybe it is because we usually sleep a lot in winter ;-)

Your new album will be released at october 20th. How do you feel after making this album?

Mayte: We feel very proud of our album, because we have worked very hard on it. At the beginning of Lethargy it was difficult for us to be pleased with the final result of the songs. Now we are starting to be satisfied with what we do and it is because we know much better what we like to do in a song. We worked during the last 2 years in the sounds , melodies, lyrics.. always trying to find a personal and unique way to do it.

What does the title of the album stands for? What does it mean?

Mayte: The meaning of In-macula in Latin language, is with out spot , pure..Months ago we have made the music for a terror short film here in Spain and the name was “Macula” (that means the opposite)The last track of the CD which name is In-macula was the principal song in the film. We thought it could be a good idea to use a Latin word for the new album , also because if you want you can find the prosaic meaning of the word and translate it to the feeling of our new album, more clear and lighter than our debut album “escapa”.

Your sound reminds me a bit of the early 90s techno-era. Especially your opener “The Golden Light” seems very similar to the songs of the act Phantasia (“Inner Light”, “Violet Skies”). Did they influence you?

Mayte: All the music we have listened forms a big part of our lifes, our music, our feelings, our subconscious. It could be because all the good music that arrived to our ears during the past years influenced in our likes or in our sounds, but we try very hard to have our own style , to innovate and, of course, not to imitate.

What are the lyrics all about? What inspires you?

Mayte: The lyrics are about many different things , but specially are about feeling good with our lifes, doing always what we really want to do at any time, and break up with the rules. Living our life powerfully, but with the understanding that every thing that you do in this live comes back to you. There are also a couple of letters that have a more trivial denotation. About the inspiration, is the same for the music or for the lyrics. Sometimes , we want to work with a new song and nothing comes to our heads and suddenly in the middle of the street, driving… a very good idea comes, .

It seemes to me, that Lethargy follows the sentence “Something for your mind, your body and your soul”. Do you want to make songs more danceable or do the lyrics also play an important part?

Mayte: The lyrics are very important for us and we take care of what we are saying in those. It could be at the same time a good danceable song with a good lyric.

You´ve also make a new version of “She´s in Paties” of Bauhaus. Why did you choose this song?

Mayte: We have decided to include in all of our albums a version of a classic song. In our debut album the cover was “sleepers in Metropolis” from Anne Clark and for this one we have resoluted at the same time that it should be one from Bauhaus, and our favourite was “she is in parties”.

You come from Spain. How did the people react while hearing your Sound? Are there differences between other countries?

Mayte: For the big audience, our music is dark, strange and underground but there is a part of the population that is interested in the new tendencies of the actual electronic music, in the club scene, djs, live acts… There is a big difference between Spain and other countries talking about music, specially in the industry , labels, distributors, promotional agencies and bands…that is because the rest of Europe started working on these tendencies lots of years before Spain did.

I think, that you have a havy rotation in clubs at Ibiza :)? Isn´t it so?

Mayte: No we haven’t played in Ibiza at the moment :(, but we have played in many others clubs all around Spain.

Did you played live so far? How was it?

Mayte: At the moment we have only played in Spain.

When will we see you im Germany. What will the audience see?

Mayte: We hope to be there for the next year , we would love it. Our live acts are intense. Sometimes we start with the most atmospheric tracks to continue going up with the bits in a slow progression that ends in a big understanding between the public and us , dancing, jumping or just feeling all our songs.

What does the near future bring? Do you have already new stuff?

Mayte: We hope to reach to more people with our new album, and start to play lives in the rest of Europe. We also have started working on production for other bands, we have made remixes for Neikka r.p.m, Glis , Technology, Aiboforcen and two other more bands in our country (Biotribe and Doctor Martín Clavo). About new stuff, we can tell you that there is something, but we would like to keep it as a surprise. We’ll keep you informed.

Thank you for the interview!

Mayte: Thanks to you for your interest and we hope to be soon in Germany.
